Hallowe'en is the Scots/Irish contraction for All Hallows Eve which means All Saints Eve. Although more localized praying for the saints and the dead existed before this, All Saints Day was established as a church- wide celebration in 7th century Rome, then All Souls Day was established in late 1. France to honor the Christian departed. So Halloween does have Christian roots. Where all the confusion comes in, and allows so easily for made- up versions of Halloween's history, is when All Saints and Souls began to combine with the pre- Christian traditions of other countries (although pagan Roman traditions probably had an influence, especially in the tradition of decorating graves and offering food to the dead.) In Ireland the native inhabitants held on very strongly to their pre- Christian ways, and mixed them with Christianity to create their own unique way of doing things. Also in that country, as well as others, the church allowed pagans to maintain some of their customs as long as they rechristened them to God instead of "devils" (which is what the church considered any pre- Christian spirit or deity to be). As a result, different versions of Saints and Souls broke off from the original. Later, the Protestant Reformation had an influence, as Protestant attitudes tended to be very anti- Catholic. In some places Catholic celebrations were banned. After Halloween was brought to the North America by Irish and Scottish immigrants in the 1. Hollywood, Christian right- wing extremism (this is probably the source of your teacher's misunderstanding about Halloween). The holiday in Ireland that so many cite as the source for Halloween was called Samhain. There are many Medieval sources, both sagas and historical accounts, that talk about Samhain, but it is very highly unlikely that All Saints originated with it, for several reasons: All Saints began in Rome on May 1. Roman pagan holiday - but no one knows if the choice of date was intentional) before being moved to November 1; there is no solid evidence that Samhain was celebrated outside of Ireland; All Saints is recorded as being celebrated on April 2. Ireland before being moved to November 1. The ancient Romans never conquered Ireland so they had only limited contact before the Roman Christians arrived in the 5th century. Some of the more popular ideas, like that Pomona had her own feast day or that Feralia was celebrated in October (it was really February), are incorrect. The holiday of Samhain and Irish folk customs did have a very strong influence on Saints and Souls in Ireland (just like the Feast of the Dead did among the Native Americans in the Northern US when the Jesuits brought All Saints and Souls to the Americas in the 1. In fact, unlike many other European countries that still observe Saints and Souls as national holidays, Ireland celebrates Halloween as a day almost completely unrelated to Catholicism (even though the country is largely Cathoilc - like I said they did things their own way. Ireland is known for this). In Irish it is called Oiche Shamhna (ee- hah how- nah) which means Samhain Eve. Samhain is now the Irish name for November, but this seems to be the result of incorrect etymology since the old name for November is Gam or Gamuin, and Samhain used to refer specifically to either the feast or the first of November (in the Julian calendar). The Irish "sam" is related to "summer" (cetsamon is May Day - the beginning of summer).

Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries. The Samhain influences on Halloween have remained mostly confined to Ireland. They include divination and the belief that the fairy folk interact with humans on this night. These were two major themes that can be found in the Medieval stories about Samhain (the other major theme being that it was a very important feast). I have barely scratched the surface here, but I can promise you that Halloween has absolutely nothing to do with Satan or evil, and most of the pagan- origin explanations you will read are not correct either. Romanticism, religious extremism, various religions trying to "take back" "their" holidays from each other, and Hollywood nonsense have shoved real history into the backround. It is very difficult to trace many Halloween customs directly to their source, so there is a lot of speculation, but some things are clear: the dates of the Roman festivals were recorded by the ancient Romans themselves, divination and belief in the supernatural sidhe beings (fairies to us) are not Catholic, and the Catholic Church never mentioned Ireland when establishing their festivals.
